Happy Presidents Day

Tomorrow is a federal holiday so when you go out to mail a letter, go to the bank or whatever remember it is a holiday for many.  Most of us remember celebrating Lincoln and Washington’s birthday separate but it changed in the mid-80’s.  Living in an RV or traveling most of us don’t pay attention to any holiday but the major ones.  We sure don’t and then wonder why the mail didn’t come or the bank was closed!

Great New Tip:  I love salads and always try to have cucumbers and radishes and carrots around to put in my romaine lettuce.  I hated chopping or slicing them.  Several weeks ago I was in Bed Bath and Beyond and picked up a small flat mandoline to see if I would like it. Because it is flat so takes up very little room.  I am loving it to slice my veggies for my salad and am also finding other uses for it.  Things I have tried:  raw sliced potatoes; sliced Brussels sprouts, sliced zucchini, cabbage for coleslaw and green pepper slices.  In looking on the internet I find lots of other things to use it for that I hadn’t thought of but sure will be trying now that I have it,  Just be very careful and use the hand guard as the blade if very sharp.  The one I purchased makes the slices thin or thick by the pressure you put on the hand guard.  There are more expensive ones that dial the thickness for you.   I absolutely feel that it deserves a place in your RV if you do a lot of slicing.  I found this quick and easy sounding potato recipe online that I’m sure going to try.  It’s called Pommes Anna.

Another great tip:  Magazine holders come in all forms from metal to wicker to plastic, wooden and cardboard.  They can be attached standing up or laying down and used to store all kinds of things.  Try using them for your foil, plastic wrap, etc., curling iron and products, in the freezer to separate things, lay a wooden one on it’s side to use as a nightstand,  to hold plastic lids for all your plastic tubs, cutting boards, yarn or ribbon for crafts, pasta boxes (spaghetti, lasagna, fettuccine, etc. socks and undies.  The list goes on and on about ways to use these little gems for organization.

Products I used this week: One of the things i use several of EVERY week is the Produce Keepers.  When we had the Norcold fridge I had 3  mini keepers that were always full of fruits and veggies.  Now that we have a residential fridge I have a 4 qt one that I keep lettuce in for weeks at a time.  And I have celery in one, cucumbers in another and grapes in a third one. Week to week it may change but I always have either romaine lettuce or baby spinach and cucumbers.  Also this week I used the safety knives, flat turner, salsa maker,  microwave mat, microwave spatter screen and avocado keeper. You can find them all here  http://www.rvspacesavers.com/shop/

And here is a quick and easy recipe I used the mandoline for: I used it to slice the potatoes, sausage, peppers and onions!

Sausage, Potato and Pepper Sir-fry

Slice 4-5 raw potatoes and brown in hot oil until they start to get crisp. Reduce heat.

In another frying pan to a little oil add sliced  sausage (I use Polish Kielbasa), sliced peppers (I use green but yellow, orange or red or a combination) and sliced onion.  Cook until sausage starts to brown and peppers and onions start to soften.  Add to the potatoes, stir all together season with salt and pepper, cover with a lid and simmer until done.  I don’t measure anything for this but I do use the entire ring of sausage and since Mike can’t have the peppers and onions I leave them large so he can pick them out.

*****************IMPORTANT*********************** PLEASE READ IF YOU HAVE PETS!

I have received notice of several dog food recalls in the past few weeks so those of you who have cats and dogs need to be aware of these.  I have a Facebook group called RV Pet Care Reviews https://www.facebook.com/groups/1426372777582694/  where I post anything I get a notice on.  Feel free to join that group.  Also here are the 2 websites I get the information from.  http://iheartdogs.com/recall   http://www.dogfoodadvisor.com  and click on recalls.  You can also sign up to receive notices.

Great Places to Visit:  Near Vandenberg AFB Lompoc, CA

Can you imagine the time & effort that went into this project?

This is just amazing to me, not only is it huge, the proportions are correct. It took someone a lot of time to map it out and even more to plant it. I don’t know who they are, but thank you for what you have done. With things which are currently going on in our country, it is great to see the American Spirit is alive.

THE ONLY FLAG THAT DOESN’T FLY

Between the fields where the flag is planted, there are 9+ miles of flower fields that go all the way to the ocean. The flowers are grown by seed companies. It’s a beautiful place, close to Vandenberg AFB.

Check out the dimensions of the flag. The Floral Flag is 740 feet long and 390 feet wide and maintains the proper Flag dimensions, as described in Executive Order #10834.

This Flag is 6.65 acres and is the first Floral Flag to be planted with 5 pointed Stars, comprised of White Larkspur. Each Star is 24 feet in diameter, each Stripe is 30 feet wide.

This Flag is estimated to contain more than 400,000 Larkspur plants with 4-5 flower stems each, for a total of more than 2 million flowers.

When you receive this, please stop for a moment and say a prayer for our servicemen and women.

Also please say a prayer for all those in harms way due to the terrible flooding and dam breach.

Sadly I am researching this and can’t find where they still do this.  It was planted as a tribute after the 9/11 attacks by Bodger Seed Company which has been bought out by some other company.  However I am leaving it for all to see this once glorious tribute.  Sue reports a friend of theirs did get to see it but didn’t say when.

Until next time:
